5 days Mount Kenya Trekking

5 days Mount Kenya Trekking. The following is the itinerary for the 5 day Mt. Kenya trek. Up Chogoria and down Sirimon route.

Day 1) Leave Nairobi and drive-by (either by Public means or Private) to the Eastern side of Mt Kenya passing through Rice, coffee, tea, and other agricultural farms to arrive at Chogoria town where you will meet our guide, cook, and Porters. After picking what you may need on the trek, you take a transfer vehicle and drive through the rain forest the habitat for most wildlife to Chongoria upper gate arriving in time for lunch. After lunch and finalizing with the check-in, you start the trek accompanied by your guide, cook, and porters emerging above the forest zone to the scenic moorland where you camp at Lake Ellis campsite for dinner and the 3450m. (4-5 hrs.)

Day 2) After breakfast, continue with the hike over the ridge taking photos of the high-altitude flowers, animals, and birds as well as enjoying the views of the hills on the lower side. You will reach the spectacular viewpoint overlooking the fascinating Gorges Valley, the main peaks ahead. and lakes Michelson 3,995m. at the bottom as you climb higher and the views of the landscape get beautiful during clear weather. Before you arrive at Mintos camp 4,200m. take the trail leading down to the Gorge arriving at Lake Michelson campsite 3,950m. in the late afternoon where you will set up the camp and relax the rest of the evening before settling for dinner and overnight in TENTS. (6-7 hrs.)

Day 3) Wake up at around 7.00 am for preparing for the hike up in the Gorge after breakfast. The hike will get a bit steeper and rocky with loose scree and sometimes covered with snow to Austrian Hut 4,790m. arriving in time for lunch. Spend the rest of the afternoon for acclimatization and viewing the Peaks and the Lewis glacier from a close distance. Dinner and overnight in the Tent/Hut. (4-5hrs.)

Day 4. Wake up at 4.00 am for preparing yourself and take tea/coffee with snacks and then start the last climb at 05.15 am. The climb will be steeper passing on the ridge with a loose screen which sometimes of the year is also covered with snow to reach the summit of Lenana Peak (4,985M) the third highest peak in Mt. Kenya to catch the sunrise. After a superb view from the summit as far as Mt. Kilimanjaro to the South, descend to Shipton camp 4,200m. for the breakfast and viewing of the mountain on the Northern side. After breakfast, descend down the Mackinder’s Valley and through the moorland covered with high altitude vegetations and other views to reach Old Moses camp 3,300m. for lunch, dinner, and overnight.

Day 5. After breakfast, take 2 hours to walk through the heather zone and then in the forest to Sirimon park gate 2,650m. where you will check-out and connect the transfer of the mountain to Nanyuki town where you will leave the porters and you take transport back to Nairobi.
